"Throughout all, however, there was a trait of passion, a certain depth of hue....The child could not be made amenable to rules....The mother's impassioned state had been the medium through which were transmitted to the unborn infant the rays of its moral life; and, however white and clear originally, they had taken the deep stains of crimson and gold, the fiery lustre, the black shadow, and the untempered light of the intervening substance. Above all, the warfare of Hester's spirit, at that epoch, was perpetuated in Pearl." Chapter 6, pg. 83
-Pearl from this description is known to be the wild child. Her mother doesn’t not have full control over the feeling of Pearl. However, only Pearl bring any kind of joy to the Hester, giving her a will to live.
1) Would the townspeople hold a grudge against Pearl as she is the daughter of Hester Prynne?
2) Would Pearl blame her mother for her being an outcast because of her committing adultery?
3) Why does Hester think of her daughter being ruthless. Explain.
i think that the townspeople would hold a grudge against Pearl if she stays with Hester; they will not only say that its the creation of her "sin" but also that she is "bad" because she was raised by a "sinner" and is more likely to comit a sin as well.
ReplyDeleteon the other hand they might not treat her as bad if she is taken away and raised by other townspeople because although she is Hester's daughter, she was raised and influenced by "good" people.
After people continue to mistreat Pearl, she will eventually get tired of it and might blame Hester for her being an outcast but no matter what they will always have that mother-daughter bond that will make Pearl forgive Hester and just try not to mind other people's actions.
because of the way the people are acting now, they probably would hold a grudge against Pearl. Maybe if they did take Pearl away from Hester and given to another family the people would think differently, as if Pearl's soul would be saved.
ReplyDeletePearl already protects her mother, and very lively too. But maybe that's only because she doesn't have a social life to live up to. But if Pearl keeps understanding the way she is now, she will always be there for her mother and blame her for nothing.
